Focus Groups

Focus Groups for Qualitative Research

For those not familiar with what a focus group is....a focus group is where you get a small group together to ask them in-depth questions. This is a discussion cultivated by a moderator who querries the group for specific opinions and ideas about the given topic or product. The group participants are picked at random, but also accordingly to provide an accurate sample of the market/society/culture. This is a highly qualitative approach and often is done in a conference room while video is taken behind a two-way mirror. The key here is to recruit a good group of people with articulate opinions...or to somehow extract the opinions from those who are not quite as verbose, but still buy the same product(s). This is the artistry of a good moderator. This is quite different from a poll or survey.

Unlike most research firms, we do something a little different. Instead of the "one event only"...we follow up the next day and ask if anything else "came to mind"....say on the drive home....or while watching the news/TV. We have found this little follow up often renders the juiciest morsel of opinion which turns out to be the most useful for the client.

Whether here at Elton Research or with Moore Information in Portland Oregon, Mr. Elton has participated in a vast array of foucus groups....from Wonder Bread to UPS to Weyerhaueser..... and more than 50 other "Fortune 500" companies.

We also provide this service for jury selection and trial argument assimilation.

No matter what the question or concern might be for your organization, a sample taken from a group that is commissioned for their professional or lay response can identify valuable components of your individual situation that had not been noticed in cursory surveys.

Our specialty in this arena is the focus group to identify the best logo, image or any other visible (or invisible) part of your campaigns message. In business or government, honest third parties can be the best judge of those assets that are associated with your message reception. (Typical cost is variable, but usually around 6 to 8 thousand dollars)

Elton Research also recommends MDC Research (800-344-8725) in Portland (Lester)(MDCRESEARCH.com / Market Decisions Corp)..... and Critical Data /www.Critical-Data.com (Bill Hockett) in Spokane Washington. They are very good. Bob Moore also provides this service and is excellent.
